Job Description

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Fellow position in the Imaging Genomics Lab at the IU Center for Neuroimaging (CfN, http://neuroimaging.medicine.iu.edu/) and Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (CCBB, http://compbio.iupui.edu/). The focus of the new position is on advanced neuroimaging-relevant bioinformatics technology development and application.

Requirements include a Ph.D. in genetics, statistics, computer science, engineering (e.g., ECE, BME), or related bioinformatics disciplines, and a record of academic productivities. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience with advanced techniques for analyzing genomic array data, expression array data, and/or system biology data. A strong interest in integrated analysis of genome-wide polymorphism data, high throughput phenotype data, and other biomarkers in neuroscience studies would be highly desirable, as would strong programming experience using Matlab, R, SAS, and/or C/C++.

The Imaging Genomics Lab is affiliated with two multidisciplinary centers at IU: (1) CfN, the hub for all neuroimaging research activities on campus, and (2) CCBB, the bioinformatics core of IUSM. There is also a close relationship to the Division of Hereditary Genomics of the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics. This environment provides a unique interdisciplinary research opportunity incorporating expertise from neuroscience, radiology, computer science, genetics, informatics, statistics, and other related domains. The successful candidate will benefit from mentorship of a diverse research team and will be exposed to cutting-edge technology by collaborating on various genomic and imaging projects. The major focus of the research is to employ and develop state-of-the-art computational methods for studying genetic effects on brain by analyzing genome-wide polymorphism data and whole-brain imaging data together with other related biomarker data. The ultimate goal of this research program is to improve early diagnosis and mechanistic understanding of disease processes and treatment response for brain disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia, as well as the cognitive effects of cancer chemotherapy.

IU has committed substantial resources to imaging research (see http://imaging.medicine.iu.edu/) including 3T MR, PET, PET/CT and radiochemistry. Outstanding preclinical small animal imaging resources in the same facility include two 9T magnets, PET, CT and an interventional suite. Future plans include a new neuroscience complex incorporating a brain imaging research center with additional modalities. IU has also made major investments in genomic and proteomic core facilities. Active clinical research programs in neuroimaging include neurodegenerative diseases (AD/MCI, PD, HD), effects of systemic cancer chemotherapy on cognition, pediatric brain injury and epilepsy, connectivity in schizophrenia and affective disorders, alcoholism and genetic risk, cerebral effects of psychopharmacological agents, and optimization of clinical fMRI methods. Major NIH sponsored research centers at IU relevant to imaging include Alzheimer’s Disease, Alcohol Research and Cancer. Integration of genomic, imaging and other biomarker data is a major cross-cutting theme.
